Bio

Howlite is the reincarnation of Melbourne musician Alison Thom. The moniker alludes to a mineral, considered by mystics to bear properties that calm the wearer and release old pains. In this way Thom makes a catharsis shift to unburden herself of her name and her folk roots to delve into pop music, with a darker territory of layered vocals, synthetic sounds and swirling guitar tones.

A sojourn to Europe in early 2015 provided the much needed backdrop of inspiration for the next direction. Inspired by the winter streets of Reykjavik and South London, where much of the material for her debut EP “Reasons” was penned, Thom returned home to join forces with Melbourne musician and producer Michael Robinson.

Debut EP “Reasons” contains a brooding and ethereal soundscape that weaves together countless influences; Scandinavian pop elements reminiscent of artists like 'The Knife' and ‘Aurora’ swim amongst harmonies that collide across scales, dreamy guitar fuzz and shimmering synthetic sounds, set to a heart pounding Florence and the Machine-esque pace.

While Thom’s folk lyrical prowess lingers on, Howlite sees Thom replaced by something bigger, bolder, more visceral and without apology; freed from the past to create anew.
