Bio

Pronounced Purr-kin-gee

Melbourne guitarist turned self-producer and solo artist, Matt Sheldon, has that quintessential ingredient to success; the enviable “toe tapping effect” according to Triple-J presenter Zan Rowe. Matt’s music background stems from early teenage years learning trombone and keyboard before discovering the Epiphone Les Paul Sunburst. A love affair of classic rock was ignited, thanks to the iconic influences of Rage Against The Machine, Bloc Party, The Darkness, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd and The Strokes. Through the legendary stylings of Johnny Marr and Tom Morello, Matt developed an obsession for nailing iconic guitar riffs to perfection on his trusty Sunburst.

In his final school years, Matt took his shredding obsession to the garage with three other enthusiastic garage rock enthusiasts. Over an extensive period of jam sessions, the next big thing to hit the local Melbourne indie-pop scene was born; Young Maverick. Pioneering their way through new-wave music genre ‘Holiday Pop’, Young Maverick quickly made their mark on the local indie-rock scene.

Unlike traditional lead guitarists, Matt’s humble stage presence was always without bravado. He would simply let his “(at times virtuosic) lead guitar parts... cut over the sound, adding an extra layer of brilliance to the tunes” (Wes Fahey, www.whatsoundmelbourne.com). Needless to say, Matt received several accolades for his technical skills. With “guitar riff[s] that could rival The Beach Boys” (Arianna, artfelicis.com) he was “the highlight of [Young Maverick] set[s] ... [as his] onslaught of harmonious, yet brutal guitar work ... seemed to slice through the room like a hot knife through butter” (Tara Emily, www.tonedeaf.com.au).

Young Maverick graced the airwaves of Triple J and Unearthed. They enjoyed five years of regular live shows, performing at creme-de-la-creme venues such as The Toff In Town, The Workers Club, Prince Bandroom, The Espy, The Evelyn, the Northcote Social Club and a gig at the St Kilda Festival. They supported the likes of Big Scary, Loon Lake, Stonefield, The Belligerents, The Griswolds, Tim Rodgers and Tigertown. The sunny disposition of their feel-good tunes awarded them a feature in surfing movie ‘On The Barrel’, various Triple J social media promotions and online advertising campaigns for Emirates, Jetstar and Intimo Lingerie. However, as their rise to fame continued to soar, so did juxtaposing career opportunities for the band members. And so, the Young Maverick holiday came to an end.

Following the band breakup, Matt’s insatiable appetite for creativity solidified his decision to continue pursuing ‘the dream’ on his own. Through his studies in anatomy at University, Matt came across the physiological term, ‘Purkinje fibres’; nerves that are used to produce a heartbeat. Being instantly captured by the visual uniqueness of the word ‘Purkinje’, Matt felt this was the perfect artist name to house his new body of work.

Matt chose to write an EP that exhibited his musical interests whilst sharing an introspective view of his story post Young Maverick. He wanted to challenge himself artistically by minimising the use of lead guitar lines to highlight his velvet smooth vocals and lyrical content. A desire to separate himself from the Young Maverick sound led him to experimenting with keyboards and synths. Matt also self-taught how to replicate the other band roles throughout the entirety of the creative process.

Matt is currently working on heightening his Purkinje social media presence and conceptualising how he will bring his EP to life on stage later this year. He is also constantly optimising his studio setup to improve his workflow in preparation for an exciting second EP.
